Programs & Hands-On Training

At Tidewater Tech, you can train for careers in automotive technology, welding, building construction, heating and air conditioning (HVAC).

Our programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on lab work, so you learn by doing. You’ll receive one‑on‑one support from a Career Services Coordinator who helps you find job opportunities that match your interests. Campus facilities include a Veterans Center, Student Lounge, Learning Resource Center and labs designed to look and feel like real workplaces.

Main Campus

At our main Norfolk campus, you’ll find professional‑grade labs that replicate real workplaces. The auto shop features vehicle lifts, an alignment rack and modern diagnostic equipment, so you get the hands‑on experience auto mechanics use every day.

Our Welding Lab includes more than 90 welding bays and a separate testing area, giving you the feel of a welding trade school. Instructors bring industry experience and provide one‑on‑one guidance in every training area. Independent experts and the Council on Occupational Education review the campus annually to ensure we meet high standards in equipment, technology and student support.

Branch Campus

Our branch campus in Norfolk gives you a hands‑on learning environment for the Building Construction Trades and HVAC programs. In the Building Construction Trades lab, you’ll practice installing appliances and working on plumbing, framing and drywall—skills employers need. The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) lab has equipment for residential and commercial systems, including gas and oil furnaces and refrigeration units, so you get the experience of an HVAC trade school. Industry experts review the campus each year, and the Council on Occupational Education ensures our facilities stay up to date and provide real‑world training.

What programs are offered at Tidewater Tech?

Tidewater Tech offers hands-on programs in automotive technology, combination welding, maritime welding, building and construction trades, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC). Each program combines classroom instruction with practical lab work using industry‑standard equipment.

Program length depends on the credential. Certificate programs can be completed in six to 12 months, associate degrees take about two years and apprenticeship programs last three to five years.

Welding students can complete a certificate program in as little as nine months. Associate degrees or advanced certifications may take up to two years.

You can earn an automotive technician diploma in as few as 10 months; trade‑school programs generally range from 10 months to two years.
