How to Become an Automotive Technician in 45 Weeks

An auto tech student working on a car next to a sign that says How to become an automotive technician in 45 weeks.

An automotive technician inspects, diagnoses and repairs problems in cars and lightweight trucks.

The day-to-day reality of working as an automotive technician is becoming more challenging and complex and employers are now looking for technicians who have completed an auto technician training program.

Attaining an auto mechanic certification is also a big plus in terms of gaining employment as an automotive technician.

Job Prospects for Automotive Technicians

The job prospects for aspiring automotive technicians are very promising. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that over the next ten years employment opportunities for automotive technicians would grow by an impressive nine percent.

There are currently around 600,000 automotive technicians in the United States whose median pay averaged just over $39,000 annually, according to a 2013 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Aspiring automotive technicians can significantly increase their chances of employment, though, by undertaking automotive technical training coursework in addition to holding a high school degree or GED.

Automotive Technician Training Program

An automotive technical training program typically takes about 45 weeks as a full-time student and involves learning how to properly inspect, maintain and repair cars made in the US and abroad.

Quality automotive technical training programs for automotive mechanics are typically master certified and approved by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). The NATEF is part of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

The NATEF and ASE seal of approval are definitely something to look for when you’re shopping around and looking for programs that offer technical diplomas and associate degrees.

Automotive Technician Diploma

The diploma introduces students to an array of automotive service practices, namely diagnosing and repairing standard automotive systems.

An automotive technician diploma prepares you for a career in a service station, automotive dealership or specialty shop.

This technical diploma often sets you up to receive ASE certification in niche areas like brakes as well as suspension and steering or electric systems.

After attaining a technical diploma as an automotive maintenance technician you have at least two choices – apply for a position in a service center or repair shop or segue the credits you earned pursuing your technical diploma in automotive maintenance to an associate degree in automotive technology.
