Welding programs offer a focused path into an in-demand skilled trade through hands-on learning, steady skill development, and preparation for respected AWS certifications. At Tidewater Tech Trades, you train in a supportive environment that uses real welding equipment inside an AWS Accredited Testing Facility.
This helps you build confidence through practice and supports you for long-term growth in the skilled trades.
What Will You Learn in a Welding Program?
A welding program gives you space to practice multiple welding processes, read blueprints, and complete fabrication projects that mirror real job tasks. This approach helps you see how your skills fit into the broader work of building and repairing structures.
Tidewater Tech Trades provides both a Combination Welding program and Combination Maritime Welding program to better prepare their preferred welding career path.
Welding training covers metal cutting, joint preparation, plate welding, pipe welding, and inspection. Each skill contributes to your career preparation as you may perform tasks similar to what’s expected of you in the workplace.
You’ll also spend plenty of time in the shop, which allows you to grow through repetition and improvement.
What Certifications Do New Welders Need?
Exact certification requirements may vary by job, but entry-level welders typically need to be an AWS Certified Welder to begin working. But, you can always pursue extra certifications throughout your studies to build your skill set.
Those in our Combination Welding program can prepare for
- FCAW and SMAW certifications in the 3G and 4G positions.
- TIG or GTAW certifications in the 2G, 3G, and 4G positions.
- OSHA 10-Hour General Safety Certification.
- AWS 3G and 4G plate certifications
These certifications help demonstrate your ability to weld in vertical and overhead positions, follow safety procedures, and complete entry-level tasks in fabrication shops, construction sites, and industrial facilities.
Each certification represents a skill set that adds to your readiness in the booth and strengthens your resume as you begin applying for welding jobs.
Those in our Combination Maritime Welding program, can also prepare for:
- FCAW in the 3G and 4G positions on carbon steel plate
- GTAW in the 6G position on carbon steel pipe.
- Certifications that align with AWS D1.1 and AWS B2.1 standards.
- OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Shipyard Employment Safety Certification.
The 6G pipe welding position is often viewed as one of the most challenging tests because it measures your ability to weld around a fixed pipe from multiple angles. Employers in shipyards value this level of preparation because pipe welding supports many structural and mechanical systems on vessels. The maritime certifications you earn help you approach these roles with clarity and an understanding of the standards used in shipyard environments.
Across both pathways, certifications help you demonstrate your readiness for the field. They also give you a chance to practice with clear goals in mind, which can make your training feel more structured and prepared.
What Welding Careers Can You Pursue After Earning Your Certification?
Many new welders begin in roles such as pipe welder, ironworker, boilermaker, fabrication welder, or maintenance welder. These positions appear across industries that rely on metalwork and repair.
As you gain experience, additional opportunities become available. Some welders move into roles such as welding technician, welding engineer, or welding instructor. Others pursue specialty paths based on their interests.
AWS provides insight into a wide range of welding careers found in manufacturing, shipbuilding, and specialized fabrication. Certification may help you qualify for these roles because it shows employers that you can meet industry standards and produce what the work requires.
Earning certifications also supports long-term growth because you can take on more responsibility as your skills increase.
How Long Does It Take to Train as a Welder?
Many welding programs take only a few months to complete. Your exact timeline depends on the program you choose and the schedule that fits your life. Some students progress at a steady pace because welding is hands-on from the beginning. Feeling a torch in your hand early helps you stay motivated and lets you see your progress each week.
Tidewater Tech Trades organizes its programs to help you move steadily toward certification testing. The structure keeps your momentum because you spend much of your time practicing, refining your technique, and applying what you learn.
Is Welding a Good Career Choice Today?
Welding remains in steady demand across construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and infrastructure projects. Many employers report shortages of skilled welders, which creates opportunities for people entering the field.
The work suits individuals who enjoy creating, repairing, and building with their own hands. It offers a sense of accomplishment because you see real results from your effort.
If you want a career that provides stability and opportunities for growth, welding is a notable choice. The field demonstrates persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
