HVAC Technician Job Outlook: Why Demand Has Never Been Higher

According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), the average HVAC professional today is in their mid-50s, and experienced technicians are retiring faster than new ones are entering the trade. In the HVACR trade alone, more than 100,000 job openings currently need to be filled, according to ACCA, and the pipeline of new workers isn’t keeping pace.

The BLS projects that many of the 40,100 annual openings will come specifically from the need to replace technicians who retire or exit the workforce, not just from new jobs created by growth. When demand is high and supply is short, wages go up.

What HVAC Technicians Do

The EPA Section 608 certification is federally required for any technician who services, maintains, repairs, or disposes of equipment that could release refrigerants. Without it, working on refrigerant systems isn’t legally permitted.
